On Friday night the lads got together for a try at doing a siege on the castle. We used Geoff's modified Lord of the Rings rules.
The walls of the castle had already been breached on one side.
The attackers split up with half their number going for the breach while the rest attacked the wall on the opposite side.
The defending archers took aim at the troops carrying the ladders, picking them off in ones and twos.
Unfortunately for them this made them targets for the attackers archers and at two to one odds in favour of the attacker this was not going to go well.
The defenders spread themselves around the battlements and at the breach.
By the time the ladder carrying troops got to the walls the defending archers had almost been wiped out. This made it very hard for the defenders to man the walls without being taken out by arrows.
With ladders against the wall the attackers started to pour in.
In the end nowhere near enough troops left to defend the castle. Next time the defenders will be given more troops to play with.
Nevertheless it was an enjoyable night pushing the boys around.
Looks like a great game!
ReplyDeleteNice! I always wanted to play a siege… very inspiring.
ReplyDeletelooks a great game
ReplyDeleteAwesome siege game, Rodger! Great to see the wonderful castle in action again - with lovely figures to go with it too. Maybe add a relieving force next time?
ReplyDeleteThe relieving force idea has been mentioned and will probably be in action next time.
DeleteFun stuff, Rodger. Great battle photos.
ReplyDeleteThis castle is so nice, great post! Any prisonners?
ReplyDeleteOnly a few knights that were put up for ransom!

ReplyDeleteIndeed a stunning looking game !!!
ReplyDeletePlease tell more about the castle? manufacturor?
What rules did you make for the siege?
best regards Michael
The castle is a Zvezda one that I painted and put on a base. As for the rules , I think they were pretty much straight out of the book.
DeleteLooking really great indeed !
DeleteSounds like a great game! Interesting to see LOTR rules used in another setting. Though they are a pretty solid set, so why not!
ReplyDeleteLovely stuff :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great looking game Rodger!

Really nice looking game, Rodger. I quite like that castle. The moat and basing for it are done really well. I didn't notice the ducks until Michael A pointed them out! I also noticed that the Uruk-Hai rented their siege ladders to the attackers. :)
ReplyDeleteIn the siege games I've played, the archers on the walls always seem terribly vulnerable, and it always ends like that old Beau Geste movie, with the defenders dying at their loopholes. If the attacking missile troops are more numerous and can spread themselves out in an arc to concentrate on one portion of the defences, then geometry will work to their advantage. They can kill more defending missile troops more quickly than the defenders can kill them. Not sure how you work that out, or how realistic it was.
At any rate, brilliant game!
That looks like lots of fun. A very nice bunch of images.
ReplyDeletecheers
Great looking game! Always nice to see that superb castle. Sound like a very fun game!

A most inspiring looking game :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome game and pictures!
ReplyDeleteA great looking game, there's nothing more fun than charging a castle.
ReplyDeleteNot sure how I missed this when you posted it Rodger, but its darn impressive!
ReplyDeleteAll those lovely figs and terrain man for a great setup!
What you need for a successful siege, though, is a giant wooden rabbit...
Very good thought Paul. I had forgotten about that!
DeleteGreat looking stuff!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun game and yep, Uruk Hai make the best ladders. Good to see they have shifted their energies to commerce by selling them to others. They probably have quite aggresive marketing strategies though.
ReplyDeleteDid the defenders benefit from any cover bonuses?
