15mm Fire and Fury

Some of the lads got together for a wee bash using our 15mm American Civil War figures. This battle was loosely  based on the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern. The terrain and the objectives were much the same as per the Regimental Fire and Fury scenario book, but the flags are all wrong.

Elkhorn Tavern.

 On the Union left flank the battle began with the Union up hill from the advancing Confederates.

 At the base of the hill the Union were behind some hasty breastworks made by piling up logs taken from the woods that cover most of the battlefield.

 The Rebels pushed up the hill from the start. It was slow going for the Confederates with the rising ground, trees everywhere and Union fire all making life difficult.

 At the centre of the Union lines the Rebels pressed their attack.

 Several charges were put in but were beaten back each time.

 On the hill it was the same story. The Rebels charged all along their line .

 Most of the charges pushed the Union back, slowly, but not all found success.

 After several hours the Union still held the breastworks and the tavern.

 The confederates poured on the pressure from both sides and from out in front on the Union troops at the tavern.

 Finally a bit of a breakthrough and the Union were going back.

 The Confederates piled on the pressure in the centre.

 And were rewarded with gaining the breastworks. Time was running out however, Union  reinforcements were on their way.

 Lots of casualties to both sides on the hill resulted in something of a stalemate with both sides deciding to shoot it out. The real efforts were going on down near the tavern.

 The Confederates repeatedly charged the centre pushing the Union back.

 Rebel superior numbers were starting to tell. The Union line was at breaking point.

 Union reinforcements could be seen marching up the roads. Desperately the Confederates threw all they could at the Union troops to try and scatter them before the reinforcements arrived.

But it was all too late. The Union troops held firm. With their final charges repulsed the Confederates were forced to withdraw. Close though!

Had another crack at Smooth and Rifled the other night with our 54mm guys.

We are slowly getting the hang of these rules. Here are a few photos of our latest skirmishs.
We played the game twice with each side having a chance to defend the gun.

 The Reb's formed up behind the fence line in support of the gun.

 The Union split up into three groups. Two groups came around one flank while the Iron Brigade went round the other flank.

 The Iron Brigade charged into the woods before the Confederates had time to react. The Confederates reeled back, out of the woods.

 The gun got off one round of canister but by the time it had reloaded the Union were among the crew.

 The remaining Rebels take flight and abandon the gun.

Part 2.

 Then more Confederates, including a cavalry patrol arrive on the scene. Again the attackers split up but the speed of the cavalry was the key this time.

While the Union are busy forming a defence the cavalry crash into them and manage to recapture the gun.The Union infantry fought well and did manage to empty most of the saddles.

Thomas Stonewall Jackson

When the group decided to have an ACW battle a few weeks back, I thought  it would be a good idea to maybe finish off a couple Generals that had been siting quietly on the painting desk for far too long.

Although Jackson had been finished for some time, the other figures on his base were only half done.

The other command stands will be used as Brigade commanders or Divisional commanders.

 Lt. Gen. Jackson is a Foundry figure and the other two are plastic Perry figures.

 The foot figure is a left over from the Old Glory hospital set that I painted a while ago.
The mounted figure is the Perry's General Lee figure with a head swap. I felt that having two of General lee would be a bit much!

15mm ACW

Over the past couple of months I have been busy re- basing my 15mm ACW armies. Although I really hate re- basing, the bases for these guys have been bugging me for years. Originally I painted 99% of these guys about 20 years ago.

Based mainly for Regimental Fire and Fury they could still be used for other sets of rules.

With the bases done that meant we needed to have a game.
At Easter a few of us got together for a wee game with the recently re- based fig's.

The game began with the Union holding an area of ground in front of the Rebel advance. Both sides were feeding in reinforcements every second turn. 

Eventually it was decided that the Union had done enough damage to the Confederates that they would have to give up.
